Description

WATER-FILLED POND APPLICATION

Target a Known Leak Without Draining the Pond

Granular, or crushed, sodium bentonite is intended for a very specific situation: your pond still contains water, draining it is impractical, and you have a reasonable idea where the seepage is occurring.

The granules can be distributed over the water above the suspected leak area. They sink toward the pond bottom, hydrate, swell, and may help reduce seepage through small cracks and porous soil.

If the pond can be drained: a Fine / Mix Mesh bentonite application combined with soil preparation and compaction is generally the stronger approach for sealing the full basin.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATERIAL

Is Granular Bentonite the Right Fit?

Use Granular Bentonite When

  • The pond currently contains water.
  • The suspected leak or seepage zone is reasonably well identified.
  • Draining the pond would be difficult or impractical.
  • You need material that can sink through the water toward the target area.

Use Fine / Mix Mesh Instead When

  • The pond is dry or can be drained.
  • You are sealing the entire pond bottom.
  • The bentonite can be mixed with native soil.
  • The treated soil can be compacted into a continuous liner.

APPLICATION

How Granular Bentonite Is Used on a Pond With Water

This method is most useful when the treatment zone is limited. If the leak location is unknown, spreading material across the entire water surface can consume a large amount of bentonite without addressing the actual seepage path.

Fixing a leaking pond with bentonite pond sealer

01

Identify the Area

Narrow the suspected seepage zone as much as practical before applying material.

02

Distribute Granules

Apply over the water above and around the target area. Equipment depends on access and pond size.

03

Let It Hydrate

The granular bentonite sinks, absorbs water, swells, and can migrate into small seepage paths.

04

Monitor Results

Track the water level. Broad or unidentified leaks may require additional treatment or a different method.

QUANTITY & PROJECT FIT

How Much Granular Bentonite Do You Need?

For a localized leak in a pond that still contains water, quantity should be based on the suspected treatment area and leak conditions, not automatically on the total square footage of the pond.

Send us the approximate pond size, water depth, suspected leak location, and ZIP code. We can help determine whether granular bentonite fits the situation and estimate material plus freight.

Thank you for the outstanding service!"Will be doing another review with photosjerry hartungjerry hartung ★★★★★ I have had 4 other pond builders out to a location in the hill country of desired 1ac pond. All 4 were ready to start escavation without researching soil content, collection potential, or if a well would be needed to supplement water supply. Rick came out several times and brought with him an experienced excavation operator. He took soil samples which he tested, and lasered elevations. His bid was reasonable and in line with others. But after his research we decided that this project was not a good idea. He saved me from a bad experience. But if I was going to proceed he would have been my only choice to proceed with out of the 5 pond contractors that were interviewed.Tyler SessumsTyler Sessums ★★★★★ Very nice people to do business with.
